#readthelabel – Say ‘Na’ to Sodium !
It’s really important on our part to say a big NO to sodium. It is present in most of your favorite packaged food products like bread and rolls, cheese, salty snacks, canned foods etc. Did you know that you need only a teaspoon of salt in the entire day? Most of us love Namkeens, biscuits which we consume daily. These have a huge amount of sodium! So how to control this?
To start with, we recommend you to #readthelabel Eat what you know, know what you eat! The following picture illustrates two sample labels:
The first label represents a very high percentage (20%) of sodium in a single serving. If you eat five servings of the first label, you should not eat ANY salt in the rest of your food that day. Whereas the second label has relatively low sodium and will allow you to balance your sodium intake in a better way.
The Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,400 milligrams (mg) per day Which translates to just ONE TEASPOON.
Excess sodium can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is a often a result of additional salt/sodium intake. So the yoga which you do to control your blood pressure will only be effective when you complement it with this habit of reading the label.
